Chefs for the Marcellus is a group of chefs, restaurateurs, farmers, brewers, vintners, and other food professionals who have come together to protect our regional foodshed from the dangers of hydraulic fracturing for natural gas (fracking). This highly industrialized form of drilling is already in widespread use in 34 states, including Pennsylvania, where it is wreaking havoc with farms and the water supply. Unless we say no right now, Governor Cuomo is poised to allow fracking in vast areas of the Marcellus Shale, a geologic formation that covers a large area of the mid-Atlantic region, including much of New York’s southern tier — an area of pristine waters; produce, dairy and livestock farms; and breweries and wineries. More than 150 prominent chefs and food professionals from upstate and downstate have already endorsed our campaign. Please get involved by signing our letter to Governor Cuomo asking him to ban fracking in New York State.

Toques off for stepping up! I have been talking to people in the trade about this for four years, and am too pleased this finally resonates! I’d go out of my away to patronize establishments and professionals who think likewise–why not list all coalition members, and get them to testify to their patrons and the press? New York State is all the more delicious and healthy for you who give a damn! Thank you!!
I refer you to the news area of our website, where we have posted numerous articles by and about farms and farmers who have been affected by hydrofracking. We will continue to add to that archive. http://chefsformarcellus.org/our-food-and-fracking
Dear Gloria: Thanks for your comment. We adopted our name after much deliberation; we wanted something that would call attention to the Marcellus formation as an important farming region. We didn’t want to be against something (although we are); rather we wanted a name that was positive and that showed our support for the earth and her bounty of clean water and good food.
Fantastic to learn that chefs & food growers are increasingly using their unique voices to get the word out on the dangers fracking presents to our food and water supply. Just one question: why did you use the word “for” in your group’s name? When I first learned about your group I thought you were in favor of fracking in the Marcellus shale. I did a bit of research & was glad to learn that’s not the case.
Thanks again, Gloria
Can you show us anywhere that fracing is actually affecting crops? Or the quality of food? As a journalist working on a film about the Marcellus Shale, I would appreciate any insight into the destruction of our food sources… Otherwise it sounds like a case of fear-mongering.
Thanks

THANK YOU so much for doing this! We are in Otsego County NY, an area with truly glorious farmland, farmers markets that are full of food and people, and brilliant chefs who continue to work on adding local food to their menus. Our hope is that all of our towns fighting to ban Fracking (or defend their bans–we live in Middlefield) will send the right message to the government and industry. We are gladdened everyday when we see a new group form, or a new concept come to our attention showing that people are listening, learning and DOING something about an issue that I have heard called THE greatest environmental catastrophe of our time.
THANK YOU!
